Is this what happens to actors once they get old? In April this year, veteran Hong Kong actor Henry Lo openly asked TVB executives to treat every employee fairly after frequent show cancellations led to a significant drop in income. But all the 67-year-old got in return at that time was a cold, hard reply from TVB's general manager Eric Tsang, who said: "No artiste can work until they're old". It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the actor's relationship with TVB had long turned sour. Hong Kong media recently even found out that Henry's name had been removed from the broadcaster's artistes catalog. When HK01 reached out to the Unchained Melody and Call of Destiny star, he candidly confirmed that he'd "already left" TVB. According to Henry, who revealed that his contract was ending a while back, he wasn't even given the option to renew it. "Nearing the end of my contract, they just asked me to go back and calculate my Mandatory Provident Fund. I had worked for them for 27 years and two months, once we tally the amount, the contract would end," he recalled. The Mandatory Provident Fund, pretty much like Singapore's CPF, is a retirement protection system in Hong Kong, which requires employers, employees and self-employed individuals to contribute to a retirement savings scheme. The actor then frankly said that he's "not sad at all" about leaving TVB. "I am so disheartened that I feel completely normal," he sighed, adding that he has been taking on gigs and commercials in China, and hopes to venture into live streaming or short-form dramas moving forward. Recalling his conflict with the broadcaster in April, the actor explained that he only called them out as his livelihood was affected. "Because they were directly attacking my basic living expenses," he divulged. Since then, no one from TVB had approached him for a talk either. Now, the actor feels "more relaxed" that he no longer has to worry about not having enough jobs. Henry, who is thinking of moving to China, also shared that if his live streams are well-received, he might end up earning two to three times more than what he gets from TVB every year. "It's not like I'm aiming for anything big, I just want a platform to interact with everyone. This industry is very cruel, once you leave people are going to forget you. I hope that while I'm alive, people can still remember me," averred Henry. "Old people need dignity too, old people have to be respectable too. We shouldn't leave only after people left us completely battered and bruised," he added.
